A Girl and Her Lists

Finally on vacation.  No call for discipline here.

I get sunburned because I'm too lazy to rifle through my bag for the sunscreen.  I get up at 9:00 a.m. after waking at 6:30 (4:30 my time) and forbidding myself from looking at emails when I check the phone for the time.

I eat a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich for breakfast because there was nothing much left at the end of the week, and because I refuse to go to the store before we leave for home tomorrow.

How does one feel about writing on a sunny vacation morning like this?  Great.  Privileged.  Free.

Instead of solving the world's problems on a day like today, I make a list of how I will do it on another day.  A day when I feel more organized.  Structured.  Responsible.

Today I'm going to "slack" and write lists of what I could write about.  Lists are brief and descriptive enough to get the job done.  The ideas are captured, and that is good enough.

These lists are for days where I don't feel like writing pretty, but instead just writing to "get 'er done."  And please don't underestimate the power in that.  Getting things done are often the happiest times in life.  Here's what I'd like to get done:

  • People I've called friends
  • Places I've called home
  • Parties I've experienced
  • Dreams that came true
  • Vacation spots
  • Baby names
  • Goals for my children's childhoods
  • Things I've learned to let go of
  • Favorite foods, snacks, recipes
  • Moments when I've cried for joy
  • What my husband and I dream over
  • Why I'm grateful for my family of origin
  • What I appreciate about my in-laws
  • Times I have felt the spirit strongly
  • Sacred places
  • When I experienced the joy of writing
  • When I felt most beautiful, strong, or in-the-flow
  • Surprises I've had or given
  • Reunions - after missions, family reunions, class reunions
  • Favorite sparkly things
  • Music that gets me moving
  • Favorite yoga poses
  • What I've learned from each call to serve at church
  • How lists have blessed my life
  • Things that just tickle me
  • Women I like (or would like) to go to lunch with
  • People I'd like to interivew
  • Skills I'd like to acquire
  • Books I'd like to write
  • Adventures to have as our family grows

That took me a mere 10 minutes.  So, if I never get around to writing my life story for my progenitor's benefit, they will at least have a book of lists that will tell them what we would have talked about if we could enjoy a casual conversation on a vacation home's screened in porch.  This plethora of topics will introduce them to what I felt important to capture, on a day blessed with the time to list them out.
